Interactive reading experience for the Schleswig-Holstein Medical Association with fidion’s ePaper solution
The Schleswig-Holstein Medical Association is relying on fidion’s ePaper for an interactive and accessible reading experience. The additional multimedia features offer an optimal overview and convenient use – both online and offline.
From PDF to interactive experience
The ePaper from fidion now offers the Schleswig-Holstein Medical Journal a wide range of optimisation options for structuring, presenting and enriching articles.
The changeover has taken the presentation of the Ärzteblatt to a new level. After layouting in InDesign, the resulting PDF is subsequently enriched with interactive structural data to enable links between articles and a user-friendly reading experience. Whether it’s jumping to another article view or adding multimedia data, fidion’s ePaper ensures seamless presentation. This means that articles also become clickable components in the newspaper view of the ePaper. Even after downloading and reading in offline mode, it is possible to jump to an online version directly from the PDF. By working with related articles, the ePaper also remembers which page readers are on.
Optimal display in two versions
In addition to the classic display of the front page, links to the most important articles can be set up on the home page, allowing readers to jump directly to the respective pages. A structured table of contents, which offers further subdivisions and the display of curated articles in addition to the sections, provides an optimal overview of the content. Filter options also allow the articles to be sorted. This gives readers the best possible insight into the content on offer.
In addition to the classic newspaper format, readers can switch to a detailed article view. The ePaper solution from fidion provides ideal enrichment with additional information: supplementary images, info boxes and embed code options can be easily added, so that the advantages of the ePaper and the newspaper view are retained. Another feature that was difficult to implement in the pure PDF offering is optimised accessibility. The reading aid option and the ability to change the font size are directly integrated. For additional clarity, the newspaper view can be switched to a single-page display.
Breakthrough to magazine display
Thanks to the numerous display options, typical magazine components can now be displayed via the ePaper in addition to the classic daily newspaper. Teasers linked to the article pages and bookmarking of related articles optimise the reading experience and offer new linking options.
Thanks to its highly flexible display options, fidion’s ePaper has evolved in recent years from a classic daily newspaper ePaper to a barrier-free complete solution for all publishers.
Lean processes in implementation
Despite the innovative changes towards magazine functions and the enrichment of the PDF pages with structural data, the project was implemented in a very short time. It took just 80 hours of service and development to transform Ärzteblatt from a pure PDF display into a modern, accessible and interactive reading experience that appeals to new target groups and ensures better reader loyalty. Despite the holiday and summer periods, the project was completed within three months.
‘The Medical Association has taken a forward-looking step,’ says Gerhard Schneider, Managing Director of fidion. ‘In addition to daily newspapers and magazines, we now also offer a comprehensive solution for the Ärzteblatt as an ePaper.’
